Yarra Valley Villages Pinot Noir (2016)

This is a fearless Pinot Noir, with enough guts to take on an army of thirsty guests. Concentrated licorice and cherry flavours, with savoury spices and a silky smooth finish, make this ruby red wine the ideal accompaniment to a sticky Peking Duck.

Region: Yarra Valley.

Villages: Tarrawarra, Dixons Creek.

Appearance: Vibrant red, bright, touch of purple.

Bouquet: Youthful but gently aromatic Pinot Noir, strawberry, plums, spice, smoky oak.

Palate: Medium weight, textural, red fruits, wood spice, fine tannin, silky finish.

Suggested Cuisine: Gnocchi with pine mushrooms.

General Characteristics: Dry / Medium Bodied

Vintage Conditions: 2016 was warm and dry through most of the growing season. Good rain in late January settled things down and the harvest was mild but quite early.

Vineyard Selection: Estate vineyards at Dixons Creek, The Abbey, Ponderosa, Denton, Viggers. Older plantings MV6 clone, younger plantings a mixture of 777 and MV6.

Winemaking: Fruit was hand harvested. A combination of whole berry with 15-25% whole bunch is tipped into both open top and small static fermenters. 12-18 days of maceration and fermentation. Pressed, settled overnight and then filled to French casks by gravity. 

Wine Analysis: Alc/Vol: 13.5, pH 3.65, TA 6.0g/L

Cellaring: Will continue to develop complexity and interest for 3-5 years in a good cellar.
