Vinoque means ‘and wine’ or ‘which wine’ in Latin depending if it is a single word or two words. We rather like the two word version.
Background: Gamay produces light to medium weight, bright, crunchy red that is delicious when young but can mature beautifully over 3-5 years. We think it is one of the most exciting new varieties currently being grown in the Yarra Valley.
The Vineyard: The Roundstone vineyard was planted by John and Lyn Derwin in 1998 and is now owned by Malcolm Wiley and Christine Taylor. It is a beautiful north facing vineyard at Steels Creek on the western slopes of the Yarra Valley.
Season: The 2015 vintage was mild and dry producing fruit with gentle aromatics and wonderful purity.
Tasting Notes: Bright purple colour. Classic Gamay characters of black cherry and briar, light stemmy flavours, plump, sweet fruit and frighteningly drinkable.
Winemaking: 50% whole bunches, the balance destemmed. Some early turnovers followed by a little bit of plunging toward the end of fermentation. Aged in 500 litre used casks for eight months and gravity racked at all stages.
Analysis: Alc/Vol 13.0%, pH 3.45 TA 5.7g/L
Cellaring: Up to 5 years
Production: 3,300 Bottles
Harvest: 10th March, 2015
